General Information about trucking

Successful

Thinking about getting into trucking

We meet with a lot of people who are considering starting a career in the trucking industry. Most of these people don't know what they don't know.

A better than average wage can be made as a professional driver. Drivers are paid most of the time in one of three basic ways.

1. Hourly - this is usually a local driver. Local means these drivers are able to go back home usually the same day they left to go to work. In may cases this group of drivers may run in multiple states during the work day.

2. Mileage pay - these drivers are paid by the mile and generally are over the road drivers who can run a lot of miles in a week.

3. Percentage pay drivers - these drivers are paid a percentage of what a load is paying to the truck.

Many companies offer other monetary compensation to their drivers for other activities such as hourly pay for break down or being delayed at a shipper of consignee location.

Other things drivers do during a work day.

All drivers are required to document the work day and activities they perform. Most of the time this will be with an ELD (Electronic log device) this is a computer based machine the driver uses inside the cab to keep up with the time they must rest and are allowed to drive.

Types of trucking companies

Not all trucking companies operate the same. there are

Tanker companies

Flatbed companies

Dry van

Refrigerated

Specialized carriers

And the list goes on. there are differences in these types of companies. for example

a flatbed driver will in most cases be responsible for securing the load with chains and or straps. and covering a load with a tarp. Keep in mind this must be done in all types of weather conditions.

A refrigerated van driver will be responsible for maintaining the climate controls on the trailer and in many cases will be offloading at restaurants or food distribution centers.

Specialized carriers can be oversized or over dimension loads that require special permitting for each load.

Tanker drivers may have to connect a hose to load or off load, these drivers generally must have a higher level of skill when driving due to the load being in motion
